Esta lista tiene como base la crítica de los discos. Se ha realizado según opiniones recopiladas entre 50 revistas y sitios dedicados a la música. Para competir, cada artista o grupo tiene que haber tenido al menos dos álbumes entre los más votados. De esa forma no han podido clasificar bandas que han tenido un gran suceso con solamente un álbum, tales como Lauryn Hill, Arrested Development, My Bloody Valentine, Happy Mondays y DJ Shadow, entre otros.
